Mr. Wilson (Geography)

Mr Wilson taught Geography at Tulketh he arrived in 1976 along with another Geography teacher called Mr. Murray.  He was quite a stocky built man with longish mousey brown hair with what I would call a hound dog expression on his face. Like all the teachers at the time wore greenish and brown coloured clothes with the unmistakable kipper ties which were quite popular at the time.

I first come across Mr. Wilson in the 2nd year when he taught me Geography which due to the overcrowded conditions of the school was taught in the dining room for most of the academic year. This wasn’t ideal for good learning but, in a school, built for 450 pupils and now housed 900 needs must, I suppose.

I thought he was a good teacher and would sometimes to break up monotony talk about his self and his background which appeared to be from the Manchester area . In the 4th year he began dating an attractive Biology teacher called Miss. Hardman. They would eventually marry before I left Tulketh in 1980.

Myself, Dennis Winder, Uni Kampz and a few others took liking to Rock n roll around the 3rd year which at the time spearhead by revivalist groups like Showaddywaddy, Darts, Matchbox who brought a 1970’s look on the popular music of 1950’s. TV series like Happy Days and blockbuster films like Grease, Lemon Popsicle with 1950’s themes were alternative too Disco and New Wave which dominated the charts and popular BBC1 chart show Top Of The Pops of the late 1970’s. Many times, Mr. Wilson would tell us of his love of Rock n roll and that even though he later liked The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Who in his University days.

One day he brought into school copy of the soundtrack to the film That’ll Be the Day film from 1973 which starred David Essex, Ringo Starr, Billy Fury and many others. The soundtrack was full of classic Rock n roll tracks over two long playing discs which were immaculate not a scratch and on the label of the time Warwick Records he gave the copy of the album to Dennis Winder which he would eventually swop with a copy of the Matchbox debut album which I had.

In my final year Mr. Wilson was an Exam Judicator a couple of times in the CSE exams in the May of 1980. I remember he helped me out with a couple issues to do with getting through the exams in what can be a stressful time. After I left Tulketh I believe he had a skateboard shop in Preston town centre for a few years and later left Tulketh with Mrs. Wilson to work in Longridge and later Blackburn.
